Chapter Fifteen

Quinn

I watch Ronan adjust his clothes and put everything back to rights. I still can’t believe I just did that. It really isn’t like me. I mean yes, I’m outgoing and bold but I’ve never done anything quite that risky. I’ve also never been with anyone who made me want to do something like that. There’s something about Ronan that brings out a different side of me. I want to push him, to tease him, to test his boundaries and mine. I don’t try to understand why. We’re just having fun. Anything more serious isn’t possible right now. I don’t even live in this town. Not really. I still have an apartment in Durham, nearly 3 hours away. All my things are there. I can go back at any time. At least that’s what I tell myself. The truth is, I haven’t considered the possibility of going back in over a week. Not since Ronan and I started doing whatever this is. My mind skitters away from that line of thinking. It’s way too soon to be thinking that way.

As I watch, Ronan gives me a thoughtful look before opening his door and climbing out of the car. He walks around to my side and opens my door. When I give him a questioning look he points toward the driver’s seat.

“You want to drive or not?”

The smile that spreads across my face is massive.

“Seriously?”

Ronan gives me that little half-smile I love. “Yes or no? Don’t make me change my mind.”

I nod, suddenly giddy as a child. I scramble over the gear shifter and into the driver’s seat before Ronan can change his mind.

“You do know how to drive a manual, right?”

I roll my eyes as I adjust the seat and mirrors. “Please. I learned to drive a stick when I was 12.”

His eyes narrow at me. “Do I want to know why you were driving a car at 12 years old?”

I step on the clutch and brake and turn the key. As the engine roars to life, I shoot Ronan a grin. “Probably not. Relax, Officer King. I promise to take care of your baby.”

“Hm.”

Driving Ronan’s car turns out to be just as much fun as I thought it would be. The Camaro is loud and powerful, and I can see why he loves it. Once we’re back on the paved county road, I give in and lay on the speed. I upshift, watching the speedometer climb higher. The wind through the open windows whips my hair into a snarled mess, but I don’t care. I love this. Ronan watches me without comment though we both know I’m speeding. I don’t know where we’re heading, and he doesn’t seem inclined to direct me. I turn down random back roads, not caring about the destination. The more isolated they are, the better.

“If I’d known it would make you this happy,” Ronan says, “I’d have let you drive my car months ago.”

I pull to a stop at a stop sign and smile over at him.
